(Edmonton, Alberta) – Servus Credit Union announces the creation of a new partnership and research collaboration with the University of Alberta Faculty of Science, the first of its kind for an Alberta-based financial institution. Under the agreement, Servus Credit Union will provide nearly $1.6 million in funding over five years to support research projects in data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing and related areas. It will include joint research projects, the creation of a new industrial research chair, opportunities for graduate student research applied to real-world financial challenges, and professional development for Servus employees.
"Servus Credit Union is privileged to work with the University of Alberta to grow our understanding and use of artificial intelligence and data science here in Alberta," stated Garth Warner, President and CEO of Servus Credit Union. "As an Alberta-based company, we want to build a program that we can learn from, and we want to nurture and retain talent that will benefit us and the province as a whole. Our ultimate goal is to improve the financial fitness of our members and Alberta."
Servus Credit Union began working with the Faculty earlier this year and is excited about this new development. The formal partnership will launch immediately.
“I applaud Servus for their vision and understanding that the world is changing. New technologies will have a transformative effect on the way we live, work, and play,” said Jonathan Schaeffer, Dean of the University of Alberta Faculty of Science and an expert in artificial intelligence. “As one of Alberta’s leading financial institutions, they face many interesting challenges, and we are delighted to work with Servus to find 21st century solutions to help push the industry forward.”
