Ten strategies to reduce daily spending

You’d like to start putting some money away. Then you ask yourself, “What money?” You do have that extra cash, but the trick is finding it.

Track every penny you spend. The key is knowing where your money goes and finding a few dollars here and there to save. You may be surprised at how much you spend and how much you can save by changing a few of your daily habits.

Saving even a little bit each month will add up over time. Cutting down on some of your daily expenses is a good way to start.

  1. Use the ATMs from your financial institution so you won’t get charged with extra account fees.
  2. Visit the ATM a maximum of once per week and take out only the cash you need for that week. Too many transactions can result in higher bank fees.
  3. Don’t carry your debit and credit cards with you. You can’t buy impulsively if you only have the cash in your wallet.
  4. Give yourself an allowance for treats, eating out, coffee and other non-necessities. If you reach the end of your cash before you reach the end of the week, no more treats for you that week.
  5. Sign up for the FREE rewards cards at places where you frequently shop. The discounts add up over time.
  6. Bring your lunch to work more often than you eat out. If you eat out, leave half on your plate and take the leftovers home. Use them for lunch the next day.
  7. Bring snacks to work so you’re not tempted to run down to the corner store or hit the vending machine.
  8. Make your coffee at home. If you must buy a coffee, get a regular coffee instead of a pricey latte.
  9. Drink more water. Not only is it good for you, it costs less than coffee and soft drinks.
  10. If you absolutely must play the lottery, consider joining a lottery pool. That way you spend less each week and still get your chance to win.
