Signature running event steeped in tradition turns 25…

Edmonton, AB – March 28, 2017 – This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Edmonton Marathon, and the event is thrilled to announce Servus Credit Union as the new title sponsor. This partnership will continue to elevate a running event that experienced record-breaking registration last year. A signature race on the City of Edmonton calendar, the newly named Servus Edmonton Marathon takes place the weekend of August 19-20, 2017.

Event Director Tom Keogh says partnering with Servus will help take the marathon to the next level, “The race has grown and progressed since moving downtown in 2014, and now having Servus as a partner will improve and grow the race, delivering an amazing experience for our participants, spectators and the community in the years to come.” Keogh adds, “We believe our strategic partnerships with the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Tourism and Edmonton Economic Development has developed the right conditions that led to this exemplary sponsor coming on board.”

As a community minded organization, Servus is always looking for ways to develop relationships with community related events that share their values.

"Servus Credit Union is thrilled to be the title sponsor for the Servus Edmonton Marathon Family Festival Weekend,” says Gail Stepanik-Keber, Chief Brand, Digital Banking and Corporate Social Responsibility Officer for Servus Credit Union. "The same kind of planning, dedication and commitment needed to complete a road race are key to being financially fit for life." Stepanik-Keber adds, "Servus works with our member-owners on their financial fitness every day so this partnership is a great fit!"

Running Room founder John Stanton, a dedicated and long-term sponsor of the Edmonton Marathon, says the new partnership will maximize the event’s organizational strengths, “This relationship will help solidify the strides made over the last few years when the Edmonton Marathon moved to the Shaw.” He adds, “It’s exciting for a community event to find a partner that will build its base of support and increase interest in the Servus Edmonton Marathon.”

Edmonton Marathon stakeholders are also lauding the new partnership. "It's great to see a local business support the sustainability and growth of events in Edmonton," says Councillor Scott McKeen. "We look forward to seeing the Servus Edmonton Marathon continue to offer citizens opportunities to be active and engage with their communities, as well as attract visitors to experience the race and all our city has to offer."

Known as the Alberta Capital City Marathon back in 1992, the early years saw hundreds of participants out on race day, which took participants to the finish line at Commonwealth Stadium. Now, decades later, the event attracts over 4,500 racers downtown to take in the vibe of a big city marathon from the Shaw Conference Centre. The course boasts plenty of scenery with stunning views of the River Valley and runs through historic neighbourhoods. Runners then feel the energy and support while running down iconic Jasper Avenue to the finish line. The Servus Edmonton Marathon logo reflects the friendly feel and atmosphere that the City of Edmonton is known for.
