Statement of intent

I am excited for the opportunity to further represent Servus members at the board table. I believe my experience with board governance, risk management, small business and strategic planning will help me bring increased value to Servus. I believe strongly in co-operative principles and know that Servus has lots more to offer to individuals and communities throughout Alberta.

I’m excited about the opportunity to be part of the governance leadership team who will guide this wonderful organization through this economic downturn/ political uncertainty. I believe now is the time for Servus to show everyone the advantages of being a member-owner. I would certainly appreciate your support to serve on the board of directors to help improve member services and finances, creating a lasting financial institution that changes lives, withstands challenges and threats, and is there to further serve future generations of young Albertans.

Servus’s vision is “Servus Credit Union builds a better world – one member at a time.” As a director, what would you see as your most important contribution to achieving this vision?

As a director my most important contribution to achieving this vision would be to understand the needs and concerns of our members, and bringing that understanding into the discussion and decisions made at the board table. I want to ensure that we exceed the needs of our members and provide them with service delivery that wows them. Our members will be our best advocates if we properly lead this great organization to further success. I also intend to ask the tough questions, seek innovative solutions and do deep due-diligence to find better ways to better build member’s worlds.

What distinguishes a credit union from the chartered banks?

Credit unions are co-operative financial institutions that share profits with members, allow members to vote at director elections and have a say at annual meetings. Chartered banks send their profits to shareholders who are not local and base their business model on making profits from their customers. Credit unions support local people, communities and charities and are passionate about making a positive difference where they are located. Credit union members are owners of their financial organizations; bank customers are simply customers who have little say and no share in their success or direction. The success of a bank is based on profits; the success of a credit union is based on member satisfaction.

What are the key issues or challenges facing the financial services industry today and how could Servus deal with them?

Today is the perfect time to benefit from the advantage of belonging to a credit union. A downturn in the economy, low oil prices, employee layoffs and political uncertainty has provided financial stress and frustration to many Albertans. Servus can reach out to help these people by providing sound financial fitness expertise. Servus can be the calm in this economic storm and build loyalty and trust by helping those in need. Financial services today struggle with reduced customer loyalty, low interest rate margins, high bankruptcy rates, increased competition and cyber security. Servus can manage these challenges by working closely with national and international experts within the credit union family. Servus must be innovative, nimble and collaborative to succeed. We can best deal with these challenges by working closely with members to improve their financial situations.

What knowledge, skills and experience would you add to the collective board team to help Servus Credit Union into the future?

I learned the value of hard work and integrity from my farm roots. I believe very strongly in honesty, integrity and helping others. I have run a successful small business and bring business skills to this table. I’ve raised farm livestock and crops and understand the farming communities where many of our branches reside. I’ve worked in the oil industry and have been a successful trusted project manager and negotiator with huge projects. I have the ability to listen to people’s concerns, understand their needs and come up with solution that makes sense. I am an ICD graduate and look forward to using these wonderful skills.
