Changing one life at a time

Brenda Ricard
Manager, Commercial/Agriculture Lending
Grande Prairie

Working with young people is a rewarding experience, and Brenda Ricard knows this first hand. She has volunteered to help with her children’s activities, Relay for Life and the Peace Draft Horse Club. She also spent nine years helping with the 577 Squadron of Air Cadets.

Brenda has also been involved with Junior Achievement for 20 years and is currently the chair of the Grande Prairie Board.

“As a child I knew I wanted to either be a teacher or work with numbers,” says Brenda. “The numbers won, but with Junior Achievement I get to do both.”

Junior Achievement is a non-profit organization that works with schools to give young people the financial literacy skills they need to prepare for success in their lives. Brenda notes that there are so many things that young people need to know, and some of them graduate without learning basic life skills.

One moment in particular will always stay with Brenda. “I was teaching a class and one student had indicated at the beginning of the day that she wasn’t likely to stay in school. After my session that student came up to thank me. She said I had changed her mind and she wants to look at her career options. That’s the kind of thing that makes volunteering worthwhile. I’m very fortunate that Servus gives me the time to do this work.”
