Statement of intent
I have been privileged to serve one term on Servus Credit Union's Board of Directors. Thank you to the members for that opportunity. As I let my name stand for a second term, I reflect on the learning I have had as Chair of the Governance & HR Committee as well as my current role as Vice Chair of the Enterprise and Risk Management Committee. On your behalf I have served on the Alberta Central Board most recently as the Chair of the CEO Selection Committee. Through this first term I have gained knowledge and experience that I hope to continue to use if you honour me with the chance to serve again.
Most of all, you as members have engaged me in expressing your aspirations for our credit union and I proudly advocate for everyone wanting financial fitness and a caring place to protect their money. Our commitment to co-operative values and collaboration helps build membership as well as communities when disaster strikes. Our values, integrity and vision of building a better world one member at a time, are integral to Servus and to my family and I.
Please honour me with your vote to continue our noble purpose.
Servus’s vision is “Servus Credit Union builds a better world – one member at a time.” As a director, what would you see as your most important contribution to achieving this vision?
My strength is building relationships and working diligently to advocate for my beliefs, which truly align with the values and noble purpose of Servus. With our members through Community Councils; with the board through our meetings and with staff through a commitment to understanding our strategies and policies, my contribution is my total effort to represent our members in a wise and prudent fashion.
What distinguishes a credit union from the chartered banks?
Credit unions are owned by the members. They are regulated through the Ministry of Finance and CUDGC assures that credit unions adhere to the regulations. There are provisions for incorporation under federal legislation as well. Credit unions act in the members' best interests and a credit union is most often the most personal and pleasant place to manage and care for your money. Staff take a real interest in members' needs! Banks are administered through the Bank Act. They are owned by shareholders and their operations reflect a strong profit motive in favour of those shareholders. They have the capacity to operate throughout Canada and have holdings including subsidiary companies.
What are the key issues or challenges facing the financial services industry today and how could Servus deal with them?
Increased regulation, an uncertain economy, declining deposits, competition with ATB, cybersecurity and potential credit union failure are the most important issues. We can be clear and truthful advocates, educate our members, stay current with trends in information and technology, and build relationships with our members and with our partner credit unions and business partners. We can manage prudently and keep our members first and foremost!
What knowledge, skills and experience would you add to the collective board team to help Servus Credit Union into the future?
I would add my knowledge and experience from three important areas of government experience: as school trustee and Board Chair as well as Chair of ASSA; as municipal councillor and Reeve of Strathcona County and Chair of a tax policy committee for Alberta municipalities; and as an elected MLA & Minister of six ministries including the Ministry of Finance. In addition I have owned and operated a small consulting business and served customers both nationally and internationally. Finally, my knowledge and experience gained from serving on Servus's board one term, including benefitting from personal development programs, has given me additional skills in serving as a team member.
